  1. ALASKA MARINE HIGHWAY SYSTEM --
  2. Alaska's unique ferries link its coastal communities
  3. via a waterborne highway system. This is one of the
  4. nicest ways to see the inland waterways of Alaska's
  5. "panhandle" and of Prince William Sound. Ferries,
  6. ranging fron the snub-nosed commuter CHILKAT to the
  7. COLUMBIA, flagship of the line, serve the Inside Pass-
  8. age from Seattle & Prince Rupert to Haines & Skagway,
  9. thus linking travelers to Alaska's Interior. Other
  10. ferries serve coastal cities of Homer, Seward, Cordova,
  11. Kodiak, Whittier, & Valdez in Southcentral Alaska. Com-
  12. munities on the Alaska Peninsula & the Alutian Islands
  13. in Southwestern Alaska also receive ferry service.
  14. Passengers -- with or without vehicles -- can stop over
  15. in various ports of call at no additional charge. USDA
  16. Forest Service naturalists are on board some ferries
  17. to talk about the Chugach & Tongass national forests
  18. through which you travel. Reservations for vehicles
  19. and staterooms are a MUST -- sometimes months in ad-
